How to prepare for an Autumn business photoshoot

How to prepare for an Autumn business photoshoot

Ahh the joys of Autumn! I do love this season, with warm coffee (or hot chocolate), luxurious layers, and fireplaces. However, as a photographer it does sometimes mean being well-prepared for changes in the weather. There are a few things that change when you are planning an Autumn business photoshoot, and as the person in front of the camera, you’ll want to bring a few essentials with you.

Here’s my guide to preparing for an Autumn business photoshoot:

Bring lots of layers!

It may seem obvious, but planning for the British weather during Autumn is an important part of planning for your business photo session! Feeling cold can be a drain on your energy, and often brings a little bit more rosiness than you may want in your photos for your business!

I recommend bringing some jumpers, a hat, and a scarf that you can easily add and take off depending on the photos and when we move from location to location.

Have outside and inside options

When you are planning to have a photoshoot, one of the biggest elements for us is choosing the location/s. This is the same when we are planning a session outside of the warmer months. I tend to recommend having outside and inside options so we can both warm up and get out of the potentially less agreeable weather.

I also recommend having back up options in case of rain, so we can have photos that you will love, if even it means not having outside shots. I’ll share a little more of the requirements of having photos inside venues, in a future post!

Think of the colour palettes

For many of my business clients, they have a certain palette that we want to convey in our business photos to stay on brand. Autumn also has it’s own general theme, from burnt oranges to deep purples, so if you want to have specific colours in your images, we will need to plan the images to be taken in specific areas.

Autumn really is a beautiful time of year, which is why I love taking business photos during this season, however, if you’re looking for bright, sunny, and summery palettes, it would be best to organise your images to be taken inside a venue that reflects this.

As an alternative option, we can also organise your wardrobe to reflect your brand colours. This is a great way to continue to showcase your business in a subtle way, perhaps with accessories or your extra layers, while having the backdrop of a softer Autumn landscape.

Bring your essentials

Whenever I organise a photoshoot with any of my clients, I recommend a few essentials to bring with them, and never is this more important than when it’s a little chilly!

The essentials to bring with you on a photoshoot are:

Make-up – this is so you can touch up your look, perhaps change your lipstick, or even add a little lip balm to prevent dry lips in the chillier wind.

A change of clothes – to have the perfect bank of images for use in marketing and social media, you’ll want to bring a change of clothes. I often work with a personal stylist to help my clients plan their looks. This can be a great option if you are unsure on how to maximise our time together and create a great selection of images you can continue to use. Examples she often recommends bringing to our clients are jewellery, a blazer (or two), change of shoes, and a selection of shirts or dresses.

Business materials – there’s nothing quite like lifestyle shots of your own business materials or products. We can create a few images of you with the business products like your business cards, your laptop, and products if you create them. While I will also take some images of them in situ without you there, so you can use them across your social media without using “stock” imagery.

As a photographer for business owners, I get to enjoy creating images that truly reflect the unique personalities and businesses that my clients have. With this experience, I love making sure they feel confident, calm, and prepared for the photoshoots we have together. I hope this selection of my tips for preparing for your Autumn photoshoot helps you feel ready to get photographed!
